Colleen's Biography:

Colleen Spencer Henderson, fine art photographer and Photoshop trainer Colleen’s photographs reflect calm, solitude, and simplicity.

Colleen was always intrigued by photography, even as a young child, but it wasn’t until midway through a business career that her photography interest took on more urgency. Photography became a temporary escape from the dual demands of a full time consulting job and parenting a young preschooler. Whenever possible she would grab her camera gear and take herself for a pre-dawn walk. The cool crisp air and the tranquil sounds of nature worked their magic, and soon her mind would quiet, her spirits would lift, and the image making would begin. Having no formal training, she pointed her camera at anything she found interesting and over time realized that many of her favorite images were of soothing, calm scenes with simple and orderly components – most definitely not part of her normal day-to-day!

It took several years but eventually Colleen shifted away from business consulting to pursue photography full time. Over the last two decades she has achieved mastery at darkroom processing and digital techniques. Recently began developing her Book Arts and Watercolor skills, creating handmade books that showcase her photographs and using images from her photo catalog as source material for watercolors.

Like most photographers, Colleen has favorite shooting locations and subject matter, but specific image content is less important to her than capturing an interesting interplay of light and shadow in her compositions. In fact she loves the challenge of making strong and compelling images from ordinary everyday objects, such as an old broom resting in a corner, leftover coffee cups from breakfast, or sunlight illuminating the books in a wooden bookcase.

Colleen is a juried resident artist at the Torpedo Factory Art Center and a juried member of Multiple Exposures Gallery. She exhibits regularly and her work is held in many private, corporate and public art collections, including the permanent collection of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. She is an active member of her local community, serving on boards, jurying exhibitions, and assisting local arts organizations.

Since 2003 she has developed and taught classes on a variety of topics (i.e. Photoshop, Lightroom, iPhoneography, Master Printing and Portfolio Development), and led several destination photography workshops.
